Sequela of preterm versus term infants born to mothers on a methadone maintenance program: differential course of neonatal abstinence syndrome

Objective: We determined the effect of preterm delivery on the course of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) in infants born to mothers participating in a methadone maintenance program.

Study design: A retrospective cohort study was conducted in which infant and maternal data were collected from the medical records of 53 preterm and 66 term infants...

Keywords: Methadone, NAS, neonate, preterm

Gender dependent association between perinatal morbidity and estrogen receptor-alpha Pvull polymorphism

Aims: Assuming the importance of estrogen in perinatal physiology, we tested the association of an estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-alpha) gene Pvull pP polymorphism with perinatal morbidity in premature infants.

Methods: The ER-alpha Pp genotype was determined in 69 low-birth weight (LBW) boys and 72 LBW girls, 86 term boys and 81 term girls...

Factors associated with hypospadias in Asian newborn babies

Aims: Previous studies reported an increasing temporal trend of hypospadias and a significant association with poor intrauterine growth...

Maternal antenatal administration of vitamin K1 results in increasing the activities of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors in umbilical blood and in decreasing the incidence rate of periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage in premature

Aims: Infants less than 35 weeks' gestation age are susceptible to periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH)...

Keywords: Antenatal, infant, periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage, preterm, vitamin K1

Evidence supporting proteolytic cleavage of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) protein in amniotic fluid

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if: 1) insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) in amniotic fluid (AF) exhibited proteolytic cleavage in cases of intra-amniotic inflammation; and 2) if the matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-3, MMP-8, MMP-9) in AF are associated with the degradation of IGFBP-1 in AF.

Methods: AF samples (n=20) were obtained from preterm gestations with and without intra-amniotic inflammation...

Keywords: AF MMP-8, intra-amniotic inflammation, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), preterm

Obstetric antecedents for preterm delivery

Objectives: To investigate the obstetric antecedents for preterm delivery (PTD) in an Irish urban obstetric population, and to evaluate the incidence and outcome of such deliveries.

Study design: A retrospective observational study of all preterm deliveries at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin during the six-year period 1997–2002...

Reliability assessment of glucose measurement by HemoCue analyser in a neonatal intensive care unit

Background: Rapid and reliable bed-side determination of blood glucose concentration is very important in the management of acutely ill infants and especially in premature newborns...
