The procoagulant effects of factor V Leiden may be balanced against decreased levels of factor V and do not reflect in vivo thrombin formation in newborns

Thrombin regulation in newborns remains incompletely understood. We studied tissue factor-initiated thrombin formation in cord plasma in vitro, and the effects of Factor VLeiden (FVL) heterozygosity on thrombin regulation both in vitro and in vivo in newborns...

The relationship between red blood cell and reticulocyte indices and serum markers of iron status in the cord blood of newborns

Background: The aims of this study were to assess the relationship between red blood cell and reticulocyte indices and biochemical iron status measurements, and to define reference values of these markers in the cord blood of newborns.

Methods: In cord blood samples from 199 full-term newborns, cellular indices were assessed using an ADVIA 120 hematology system and iron status was analyzed by measurement of serum iron, transferrin, transferrin saturation (TfSat), transferrin receptor (TfR) and ferritin.

Results: Cellular hemoglobin in red blood cells or reticulocytes was independent of serum iron markers such as TfSat, TfR and ferritin...

Plasma endothelin-1 and clinical manifestations of neonatal sepsis

Aim: To determine whether plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) relates to clinical manifestations of sepsis in the newborn, especially with systemic hypotension, acidosis, severe hypoxemia (which may represent pulmonary hypertension) and oliguria.

Methods: Prospective study of 35 consecutive newborns with clinical sepsis: 22 with hemoculture-positive (HC+) sepsis and 13 hemoculture-negative (HC–)...

Early prognostic significance of umbilical cord troponin I in critically ill newborns. Prospective study with a control group

Aim: To determine the value of cord blood cardiac troponin I levels (cTnI) as an early prognostic factor in critically ill newborns, and to compare cord cTnI levels with the prognostic value of the score for neonatal acute physiology (SNAP).

Methods: Cord arterial samples were collected routinely for blood gas analysis, and cord venous samples for cTnI and cardiac-specific creatine kinase assay...
