Simple and safe exclusion of pulmonary embolism in outpatients using quantitative D-dimer and Wells' simplified decision rule

A safe and effective management strategy is pivotal in excluding pulmonary embolism (PE). The combination of Wells' simplified dichotomous clinical decision rule and D-dimer test is non-invasive and could be highly efficient, though its safety has not been widely studied...

Evaluation of haemostatic molecular markers for diagnosis of disseminated intravascular coagulation in patients with infections

Early treatment of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is recommended but global coagulation tests used in authorized DIC criteria are not sensitive for diagnosis of early-phase DIC...

A model for the harmonisation of test results of different quantitative D-dimer methods

The numerical test results of different D-dimer assays vary widely. Because of the complexity of the analyte of target as well as the variability in specificity of different D-dimer assays, only harmonisation of the test results seems to be feasible...

Clinical usefulness of D-dimer testing in cancer patients with suspected pulmonary embolism

Limited data are available about the diagnostic value of D-dimer testing in cancer patients with clinically suspected pulmonary embolism (PE)...

Sensitivity and specificity of a quantitative point of care D-dimer assay using heparinized whole blood, in patients with clinically suspected deep vein thrombosis

D-dimer assays are efficient in the exclusion diagnostics of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients without severe concomitant diseases...

Prognostic value of D-dimer in patients with pulmonary embolism

D-dimer levels appear to be associated with the extent of the thromboembolic burden in patients with pulmonary embolism (PE)...

Evaluation of pre-analytical, demographic, behavioural and metabolic variables on fibrinolysis and haemostasis activation markers utilised to assess hypercoagulability

Background: Measurement of some haemostatic factors and products formed during activation of haemostasis seems to be promising in the determination of hypercoagulability.

Methods: The fibrinolytic variables euglobulin clot lysis time, tissue-type plasminogen activator, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 and the haemostasis activation markers prothrombin fragment 1+2, thrombin-antithrombin complex and D-dimer were determined in 101 apparently healthy men and women aged 20–92 years (58±18 years, mean±SD) to establish variability due to several demographic, behavioural and metabolic factors.

Results: None of the fibrinolytic variables were affected by smoking, while tissue-type plasminogen activator antigen was significantly lower in women compared to men...

Coagulation-fibrinolysis is more enhanced in twin than in singleton pregnancies

Aims: To examine whether coagulation-fibrinolysis in late pregnancy in women with twin pregnancies is more pronounced than in women with singleton pregnancies.

Patients and methods: The plasma levels of D-dimer, fibrinogen/fibrin degradation products (FDP), and fibrinogen, the platelet count, and the antithrombin activity were assessed from 3 weeks before delivery until postpartum day 7 in 48 women (24 singleton and 24 twin pregnancies) without preeclampsia who underwent cesarean sections.

Results: Women with singleton or twin pregnancies gave birth at 37.3±1.2 weeks or 35.2±1.4 weeks, respectively...
