Do we measure bilirubin correctly anno 2005?

We observed 30% discrepancy between liquid chemistry and dry chemistry analysers for the determination of total bilirubin in human adult serum samples, which were consistent with a 20% overestimation and 10% underestimation relative to a Jendrassik-Grof reference method, respectively...

Stone or stricture as a cause of extrahepatic cholestasis – do liver function tests predict the diagnosis?

Background: Cholestasis, roughly divided into intrahepatic and extrahepatic forms, is a clinical challenge...

An improved laboratory protocol to assess subarachnoid haemorrhage in patients with negative cranial CT scan

Background: The laboratory analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) plays a key role in considering subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) in patients with clinical suspicion, but negative CT scan...

Determination of total bilirubin in whole blood from neonates: results from a French multicenter study

Background: Jaundice is frequent in neonates and can cause severe complications, especially in premature neonates, particularly the risk of developing acute bilirubin encephalopathy...

Analysis of the components of hypertransaminasemia after liver resection

Background: The increase in plasma aspartate (AST) and alanine (ALT) aminotransferase after liver resection is multifactorial, and a major problem is the difficult quantification of the impact of each factor involved.

Methods: Regression analysis of a large series of measurements for 92 hepatectomy patients was carried out to assess in detail the postoperative evolution of AST and ALT, together with related components.

Results: The best correlate of increased AST and ALT on postoperative day 1 was the duration of surgery (T-surg) (r2=0.31 and 0.29), with a lower correlation for intraoperative liver ischemia (T-isch) (r2=0.22 and 0.17, respectively; p<0.001 for all)...

Association between peak serum bilirubin and severity of respiratory distress syndrome in infants of less than 30 weeks' gestation

Introduction: Bilirubin can enter the alveolar space where it could inactivate surfactant and act as an anti-oxidant agent.

Objective: To assess the hypothesis that total serum bilirubin level (TSB) may affect the severity of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and the need of respiratory supports in preterm infants.

Study design: We performed a retrospective study of 184 preterm infants with RDS, whose peak TSB had a median value of 194.8 ?mol/L (=11.3 mg/dL)...
