Commentary 1: Professional theories and institutional interaction

The set of papers that constitutes this special issue of Communication & Medicine marks an important development in studies of professional–client communication. Instead of studying the practice of health professionals as an ethologist would study the mating habits of the dung beetle, it is clear that communication researchers can involve health professionals in their work to the greater satisfaction, one hopes, of all concerned.
