Embalming and the duration of the mourning period cited in the description of Jacob's death (Gen 49,29–50,14) indicate the adoption of Egyptian practices. While it is a case of the Israelite adoption of Egyptian customs, at the same time the author finds an original way to separate embalming from the foreign beliefs associated with it. The portrayal of Jacob's death and his eventual burial in the Land of Israel turn out to have a theological message that stresses the fulfillment of God's promise to Jacob and his sons.
