Ethics and Ethos in the Gospel according to John

1.1. An apparent problem: lack of interest in Johannine ethics?

Johannine ethics have proven to be a problematic and challenging area of research. As Matera contends, ‘For anyone interested in the study of New Testament ethics, the Gospel according to John is a major challenge... there are remarkably few references to moral conduct...’ Theobald expresses similar sentiments by saying that ‘Ein ethisches Interesse an der Gestaltung der Lebensbereiche der Gemeinde wird im Buch nirgends greifbar’. The limited interest in Johannine ethics seems to grow out of ‘einer gewaltigen Reduktion ethischer Fragen und Aussagen’ in the Gospel according to John.
