Laboratory diagnosis of toxoplasmosis – possibilities and limitations Die Labordiagnose der Toxoplasmose – Möglichkeiten und Grenzen

Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite that is distributed worldwide. Primary infection in immunocompetent individuals is usually subclinical, only few patients exhibit lymphadenopathy. Primary infection in pregnant women may cause severe damage to the fetus and reactivation of a chronic infection can cause life-threatening disease in immunocompromised patients. Diagnosis of toxoplasmosis can be established by serological methods or by direct detection of the parasite or its DNA. This paper discusses the present possibilities and limitations of laboratory diagnosis and points out that specialized centers are needed for a sucessful handling of difficult cases.
