Hyperextension injury of the tarsometatarsal joint(TMTJ) is a debilitating injury and arthrodesis of thisjoint is often the only procedure that can result in fullreturn to function. Most surgical procedures describedfor arthrodesis of the tarsometatarsal joint necessitatethe use of external, splint or cast, to protect the implantsused from fatigue failure. This report describesthe successful use of type II external fixator that spansthe tarsometatarsal joint in four dogs with hyperextensioninjury of the tarsometatarsal joint. This techniqueenables the patient to bear weight on the limb immediatelyafter surgery until bony fusion is achieved, withoutthe need for an additional protecting splint.
