In this interview, Peter Ladefoged, the world's leading phonetician and UCLA Professor Emeritus, speaks candidly about his long and distinguished career as professor, former President of the International Phonetic Association (IPA) and the Linguistic Society of America, former chair of his department (Linguistics), and currently one of the editors of the ‘Journal of the International Phonetic Association’ (JIPA). Among the topics treated are: the history and development of phonetics and linguistics in the USA and in Europe; the founding and growth of the UCLA Phonetics Laboratory; and the place of phonetics within linguistics, and more broadly, within humanistic and social scientific disciplines.
