Many critics have commented on how Milton's masque differs from the general themes and plottings of the masques of his time. The present essay suggests that this was in part due to his players and audience (members of the Earl of Bridgewater's young family) and to Milton's use of fairy-tale morality and motivation to spin a tale appropriate both to beginners (the Earl's actor-children) and new beginnings (the commencement of the Earl's residence at Ludlow Castle).
