Europe as a symbol in political image constructions

On the basis of a brief discussion of some methodological approaches for the analysis of visual communication in politics, this contribution reconstructs aspects of the visualization of the EU in a comparison between the critique and the draft designs by the architect Rem Koolhaas — an attempt to develop the official visual representation of the EU — with political campaigning materials. A closer look at the visualization of Europe in electoral campaigns for the enlargement and the European Parliament in Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia allows for the reconstruction of some common patterns of representation: the comparison between these national examples and the European level raises the question for similarities and differences in the visual communication of the EU.
