Halogenated Secondary Metabolites of Laurencia similis (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta)
The red alga Laurencia similis Nam et Saito (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) from Borneo, Malaysia, contains two polybrominated indoles, 1-methyl-2,3,5,6-tetrabromoindole and 2,3,5,6-tetrabromoindole, as halogenated secondary metabolites, which have been previously isolated from Laurencia brongniartii J. Agardh. The two species share a unique taxonomic feature, the production of a single tetrasporangium-bearing periaxial cell per fertile segment, in the subgenus Laurencia. This similarity is strongly supported by halogenated metabolite chemistry. The close affinity between L. similis with spirally branched, terete thalli (section Laurencia) and L. brongniartii with distichously branched, complanate thalli (section Planae Saito et Womersley) suggests that section Planae should not receive taxonomic recognition.
