Culture Studies of Porphyra leucosticta (Bangiales, Rhodophyta) from the Gulf of Thessaloniki, Greece

The effects of temperature, irradiance and photoperiod on growth and reproduction of Porphyra leucosticta from the Gulf of Thessaloniki were studied under laboratory conditions in order to produce background information for aquaculture purposes. Germlings of zygotospores became light saturated at an irradiance of 39 to 71 mmol photons m?2 s?1. Germlings of zygotospores, archeospores (gametophytic phase) and conchospores (conchocelis phase) as well as gametophytic plants grew optimally at 15 to 20 °C and relatively well at 5 to 25 °C. Formation of conspicuous thalli was only observed at 5–20 °C. At 25 °C, spores were produced within two weeks and developed into the blade phase, but only after transfer to lower temperatures. Spermatia and zygotospores were produced independently of photoperiod at 15 °C, but only under long-day conditions at 5–10 °C and 20 °C. Archeospores on the gametophytic phase were observed only under shortday conditions at 15 and 20 °C. Medium temperatures (10–20 °C) and short days promoted formation and release of conchospores, which subsequently developed into blades. The seasonality of Porphyra in the Gulf of Thessaloniki is explained by these results.
