Economic Policies for Employment and Growth in the EU

Putting Europe back on the road to long-term prosperity is a central objective of the present Commission. Renewed growth is vital to raising prosperity, to bringing full employment back to Europe and to providing the foundations for social justice. It is also vital to maintaining Europe’s position in the world, particularly in light of the challenges and opportunities provided by globalisation. I am pleased to have the opportunity to describe the recent improvements to the Stability and Growth Pact (SGP) and the relaunched Lisbon Strategy for Growth and Jobs, which I believe present a real opportunity to kick-start economic growth in Europe.
