Der Pithos mit dem Fischmedaillon. Zur Darstellung eines Rochens im minoischen Kamaresstil

Die Gefäße des mittelminoischen Kamaresstils besitzen teilweise Dekorationen mit zoomorphen Motiven, zu welchen auch Darstellungen von Fischen gehören. Ein Pithos aus dem Palast von Phaistos der Phase MM II B zeigt als zentrales Motiv ein Medaillon, das aus einem Fisch und einem weiteren Objekt in Form einer Blattschlaufe besteht, welches hier erstmals als Rochen der Gattung Dasyatis identifiziert werden kann. Die beiden dargestellten Fische stehen nicht nur in einem dekorativen Kontext, sondern es handelt sich zugleich um die stilisierte Wiedergabe eines Fischkampfes. Die Szene auf dem Gefäß ist eingebunden in eine mit den dekorativen Mitteln des Kamaresstils geschaffene Meereslandschaft. Die Darstellung eines Rochens ist in der gesamten minoischen Kunst singulär.

Les vases du style de Kamarès du Minoen moyen portent en partie des décors zoomorphes, parmi lesquelles se trouvent des représentations de poissons. Un pithos du palais de Phaistos, appartenant à la phase MM II B, présente en guise de motif central un médaillon composé d’un poisson et d’un objet à la forme d’une feuille terminée en boucle, qui peut être identifié pour la première fois comme raie du genre Dasyatis. Les deux poissons ne font pas seulement partie d’un décor, mais représentent un combat. Cette scène est intégrée à un paysage marin réalisé avec les moyens décoratifs du style de Kamarès. Cette représentation d’une raie est unique dans tout l’art minoen.

The vessels of the Middle Minoan Kamares style are partly decorated with zoomorphic motifs, including the depiction of fish. The central motif of a pithos from the palace of Phaestos, phase MM II B, is a medallion consisting of a fish and another object in the form of a garland of leaves, which for the first time is identified as a ray of the genus Dasyatis. The depiction of the two fish is not only decorative but also represents a stylized battle between the fish. The scene on the vessel ties in with a marine landscape created in the decorative Kamares style. The depiction of a ray is singular in Minoan art as a whole.
