This article deals with the collaboration of Roman citizens in the arrest and deportation of Jews from the Italian capital during the time of the German occupation between September 1943 and June 1944. After a short summary of the research on this topic which has so far ignored or played down the Italian participation, the author brings to mind the effect of the fascist propaganda which depicted the Jews as a lethal danger for the entire nation. During the German occupation the persecutors of the Roman Jews were numerous - the Italian police, the Fascist Party, but also individuals and gangs who offered their services to the Gestapo on their own initiative in order to denounce Jews. The infamous gang around Giovanni Cialli-Mezzaroma who even made use of a Jewish accomplice may serve as an example. Apart from that there were the occasional informers who betrayed Jewish neighbours or colleagues to get the 5000 Lira that were offered as a reward for the arrest of a Jew.
