Uncertainty of Measurement and Error Limits in Legal Metrology

The most important measure to be taken in legal metrology to ensure the correctness of measurements is the (periodic) conformity verification ofmeasuring instruments . The elements of verification are a qualitative test of the instrument, a quantitative metrological test, and the evaluation of these tests to ensure that the legal requirements are met. The decision criteria are described, in particular the relationship of the measurement uncertainty to the error limits, and the importance of maximum permissible errors in service for the user. Finally a method is given of evaluating the uncertainty contribution of verified instruments from their error limits.
