An ultrasound system was designed and realized for recording the immersion quenching process of steel workpieces in oil. It is based on the amplitude measurement of the reflected ultrasound echos and is able to detect the transition between different cooling stages on the surface of the workpiece. The comparison with camera data shows only small deviations. Thus, the method can be used to assess quenching processes in fluids.
