During the temperature measurement by means of a thermocouple additional thermal voltages are generated at the connections between thermocouple and connected measuring device. This also is valid for the calibration of a thermocouple measuring device by means of a calibration voltage source. This often leads to vagueness with regard to the real voltage conditions within the measuring circuit. Therefore it is shown which are the generated thermal voltages that appear during temperature measurements with thermocouples and connected measuring devices with and without connecting clamp temperature compensation. The same is done for the calibration of these measurement devices. The compensation circuits within the different measuring and calibration devices are explained. The kind of necessary connecting cables is related to respective circuit diagrams. This publication aims to give assistance for carrying out such measurements correctly in practice.
