We investigate the possibility of harnessing nonlinear dynamics (NLD) by tailoring and controlling the emission dynamics of semiconductor laser systems with an external-cavity configuration. By means of two examples, we highlight that nonlinear dynamics enables the development of novel light sources with customized emission and coherence properties. Our results emphasize the high potential of nonlinear dynamics for a specific optimization of nonlinear systems, allowing for implementation in various methods of measurement engineering.
