The “Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM)” is the master document for the evaluation of uncertainty. It addresses mainly linear models for one output quantity and offers apart from some examples only scarce information on modelling which poses the most difficult problem in applications. This paper shows that there are systematic approaches to modelling to reduce its complexity. It demonstrates that the extension to more than one output quantity is straightforward. Range calibration is an example for models with more than one output quantity, and in many cases it allows a considerable reduction of the uncertainties to be stated.
