Calibration of sensors, which is necessary for accuracy improvements, is generally considered as a matter of course. Nevertheless, a calibration-free measurement improves the economy of production and can reduce the maintenance costs particularly in the case of temperature sensors. This paper discusses the state-of-the-art in calibration-free temperature measurement. With selected examples the prospects of calibration-free measurements are shown. Novel methods, which could be interesting for other measurands are illustrated.
