Suitability of the Electrowetting Principle to Restore Human Accommodation

Keywords: mechatronics, active-optics, electrowetting, ophthalmology, Modelling

Electric influence on the wetting properties of a conducting liquid (electrowetting) is one alternative to restore the accommodative ability of the human eye by means of a mechatronic microsystem. In this contribution an electromechanical model is presented which describes the meniscus´ movement of an electrowetting lens. The refractive behaviour inside the human eye is investigated and evaluated with regard to its appropriateness for the envisaged biomedical application.
