In this paper a generic procedure for the control design of a steer-by-wire (SbW) system with a force reflecting handwheel is proposed. The design goal is to adapt the SbW performance to the performance of an almost arbitrarily given reference system. Here, in a first step the dynamics of an (electric/hydraulic power) steering shall be matched by the SbW system. The mastery of this problem may serve as a basis for the implementation of further SbW functionalities (variable steering gear ratio, variable torque/force support, derivative steering, vehicle dynamics control with active steering, etc.).
