We applied a known reduction technique for nonlinear system models on large component-oriented simulation models and found some principal drawbacks of this method. These are e.g. loss of physical interpretation of variables and constants and the uncertain stability of the reduced model. These problems can be solved by projecting subsystems of the model to be reduced on standard components. With this the physical meaning is automatically preserved. By applying constraint optimization techniques, stability of the reduced submodels can be guaranteed. We apply our method on a hydrodynamical system and give sufficient conditions for stability.
