Several soft variable-structure controls are designed for the linear model of a hydraulic actuator with an input constraint. It is shown that the plant can be controlled very fast using output feedback with a linear Luenberger observer. The influence of the observer on the performance of the soft variable-structure controls is examined. The performance is compared to that of a linear and a time-optimal controller.
