Single-mode DFB quantum cascade lasers for applications in trace-gas sensing were designed, fabricated, and characterized. The devices can be applied for the detection of the fundamental rotational-vibrational transitions of nitric oxide in the wavelength range around 5.35μm (1870cm-1) and of carbon monoxide at about 4.67μm (2140cm-1) by high-resolution absorption spectroscopy. Driven in pulsed-mode the side mode suppression ratio is >27dB and the maximum operating temperature amounts to >400K (127°C). Typical linewidths are in the 100MHz range.
