In continuous operation of piezoelectric actuators a decrease in the leakage resistance, caused by dielectric breakdown of the ceramic or by contamination with the conductive films at the surface of the ceramic, may lead to malfunction. Normally the leakage resistance of an actuator is measured in steady-state by supplying a high DC voltage. Trying to measure the leakage resistance during a dynamic fatigue test, in which the actuators are generally driven with alternating electrical signals to measure the capacitance or the strain, therefore involves interrupting the test or even changing measuring equipment. The method presented here allows simultaneous measurement of both leakage resistance and capacitance of the actuator during large-signal operation without the necessity of changes of the experimental set-up or of the driving signal.
