Tactile probing systems are state-of-the-art for roundness measurements. Under certain circumstances mechanical probing can lead to abrasion or deformation of the test sample. Using a newly developed interferometer and a commercial form measuring instrument roundness measurements at different test samples were performed without physical contact. The operability of the interferometric measuring method could be shown for a wide range of roundness deviations, materials, and surface texture. For comparison the test samples were in addition measured with a mechanical probe.
