This paper deals with control systems whose input and output signals may not only depend on time, but on spatial variables as well. For the purpose of model-based controller design using standard H∞ methods we introduce the class of finite-dimensional, distributed, linear, time-invariant systems, in short, FDDLTI systems. The problem of spill-over can be avoided by a robust stability analysis and a robust controller design. Potential applications of the theory presented here include the control of heat conduction as well as of membrane and plate vibrations, especially if the optimal placement of sensors and actuators is considered to be part of an optimal controller design.
