The application of a fringe projection system, which works as a 3D imaging device based on triangulation and phase shift technique, is particularly suitable for in-line testing of precision-forged gearwheels. In contrast to the conventional gearwheel testing, the approach introduced deals with an 2D acquisition of the whole gearing geometry with simultaneous reduction of the measuring time. On the basis of one selected gearing geometry, the measuring uncertainty of the optical measuring system was estimated experimentally by means of tactile reference measurements. The results show, that the numerical correction of the measuring values contributes dramatically to the decrease of the measuring uncertainty.
