Recent Developments in the Field of Human-Machine-Interfaces

In the first part of this paper some concepts in the field of Human-Machine Interfaces are presented that are currently discussed on an international basis. They comprise the ecological approach to human perception, situation awareness and assessment or the "expressiveness" of Interfaces. In the framework of a more global discussion of "Human-Machine-Systems" are of significance a new view on "human error", considerations about "safety culture" and the role of system design and management. Special emphasis is put on the significance of experiments for the design of Human-Machine-interfaces.
The usability of the widely mentioned "New Technologies" like "Multi-Media", "Virtual Reality" and "Computer Augmented Reality" is discussed for various partial tasks in automation, like e.g. operation, repair, maintenance, search for system documentation, instruction and training.
In order to illustrate the concepts discussed some test implementations at the Institut für Prozess- und Produktionsleittechnik (IPP) of the TU Clausthal are presented. They comprise knowledge bases systems, neural networks, self-learning systems, mass-data and 3D-displays, control of robots over the internet as well as the support of maintenance and training by means of CAR and VR techniques.
