This paper presents the application of real time optimization techniques to an olefins plant operated at BASF AG, Ludwigshafen. The application is based on a detailed process model whose degrees of freedom are determined such that optimal economic operation is achieved. The formulated objective function as well as the constraints are discussed in detail. The results are presented using the developed human-machine interface. An economic assessment and directions for future work conclude the contribution.
