A novel high-performance 24 GHz FMCW radar level gauge for applications in the fields of industrial automation and process measurement is presented. The compact and cost-effective sensor incorporates state-of-the-art microwave technology and was optimized for automated SMT board assembly. The radar calibrates itself using a surface acoustic wave reference chip. Digital signal processing compensate for temperature, ageing and nonlinearity of the hardware, resulting in excellent measurement accuracy and stability. With fuzzy algorithms the level gauge can adapt its operation almost automatically to the specific requirements of the measurement scenario, thus installation becoming very simple.
