During the last ten years, the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) has been recognized worldwide as the standard for the evaluation and expression of measurement uncertainty. The key points of the GUM procedure are the knowledge based description of the measurement, the evaluation of the input quantities involved by means of probability distributions, and the modelling of the measurement. All subsequent steps of the procedure can be carried out in accordance with specific mathematical rules using computers. For practitioners the modelling of the measurement is the most difficult problem of uncertainty evaluation. This paper presents a practical and versatile modelling concept which easily is applicable to most measurements performed. Uncertainty evaluation can therefore be completely described and carried out as a practical step-by-step procedure.
