A novel refractometric procedure uses the temporal phase shift of the orthogonal components of the field strength which a polarised light beam experiences in an optically thicker medium by total reflection at the interface to an optically thinner analyte. A miniature contact refractometer working after this principle was built using the smallest elements manufactured in conventional manner. The device was used for the determination of glucose levels in aqueous solutions. The concept, the assembly and the function of the refractometer are described and experimental results are presented.
