Some disadvantageous properties of conventional viscometric methods have been stimulating the search for alternatives. One of the most promising concepts is based on the analysis of mechanical vibrations, which are both generated and detected by the same piezoelectric device. Both quartz crystal microbalance and surface acoustic wave viscosity sensors are discussed in terms of structure, working principle, and some characteristic properties. The descriptions are completed with the results of practical test measurements.
