Phase-Doppler-Anemometry (PDA) has been successfully applied to the simultaneous measurement of size and velocity of particles. A modified PDA is introduced to determine the size of stationary droplets levitated in an acoustic field and of moving chains of monosized droplets. Droplet sizes of different liquids like water, water glycerin, and water-glycerin mixtures with added polystyrene particles were measured with this PDA-setup. The influence of optical inhomogeneities was investigated on the measurement of droplet diameter and the temporal decrease of the diameter of acoustic levitated droplets during evaporation.
