This paper presents algorithms for monitoring the periphery of driving vehicles using an on-board multi-layer laser scanner for range image acquisition. The sensor signal processing algorithms, based on dedicated sensor and object models, allow a robust detection, tracking, and classification of other road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, or passenger cars. These algorithms are the basis to set-up a consistent model required for future safety and comfort systems in passenger cars.
