Self-Monitored Valve-Drive with Electrochemical Actuator

This paper describes a heater valve drive working as a comfortable sensor-actuator system with an electrochemical actuator (ECA) and a magnetic position sensor. Due to the pneumatic working principle high forces can be provided with small volumes and low energy consumption and without any noise. By means of digital signal processing the described system automatically calibrates itself during start-up and recalibrates and monitors itself during operation in accordance to several calibration points along the working range. The additional monitoring of the most important ECA parameters such as load voltage, load current and ECA expansion speed enables a timely detection of a possible system failure or breakdown.
