Affinity-based biochips enable the highly parallel detection of biological molecules with high specificity and sensitivity. The conventional labeling with fluorescence dyes exhibits disadvantages regarding stability and signals influenced by the chemical environment. A novel detection principle based on metal nanoparticles emerged in the last years. It shows an increased signal stability and simple readout. The detection principles will be explained and the resulting advantages regarding a point-of-care application are described.
