The visual impression of the gloss of a surface depends on the distance and the angle the surface is viewed, in particular when rating a structured clear-coated surface. For looking at a structured surface it is necessary to take into account that the human eye is most sensitive at three periods per degree. Because of this visual relation it is necessary to split the wavelength range of interest. A structure of 0.7 mm can cause the visual impression of gloss, DOI or waviness depending on the distance of the observer.
