The development of steering systems is closely linked to the development in automotive industry. Steering systems went through all the developmentsteps in automotive technology. Starting with pure mechanical design followed by hydraulic servo systems, steering technology evolved to electrical active systems. The level of integration has been growing. Together with increasing functional demands realized in electronic control units complex mechatronic steering systems came into being. Controlalgorithms of steering torque are the basis for new steering functionality. The future shows high potential for further development in this technology. Especially in an integrated network system with other automotive control units there is high growth potential with added value in driver assistance and active safety.
