In the past shielding efficiency was the commonly used quantity to describe the quality of electromagnetic shields. This can no longer be considered adequate. The measured values of a given shield differ considerably from method to method. The reasons for that are pointed out in this paper. Moreover a new quantity is defined which depends leßon the method applied and which allows direct comparison of experimental results obtained with different methods. The procedure chosen is based on the concept of polarizability tensors.
