Measurement of the Left-ventricular Stroke-volume with a Fiberoptic Sensor

In addition to the intracardial ECG, hemodynamic parameters should be used as another input signal for cardiac pacemakers and implantable defibrillators. Therefore a fiberoptical sensor system was designed. It measures the optical bending losses caused by the mechanical heart contraction. A study using an isolated beating pig heart showed a good correlation of the signal with the left ventricular stroke volume.
