This paper focuses on the max-plus algebra as a mathematic tool for the description and analysis of discrete event systems. The basic principles for specifying causal connections and logical sequences in these systems are presented. Discrete event systems modeled as digraphs can be analyzed by means of the max-plus algebra. It is possible to specify the system structure e. g. the synchronisation or coordination of particular components. On the basis of analytic equations the system behavior can be analyzed, such as the calculation of eigenvectors and eigenvalues.
