Objects behind an opaque barrier become visible when imaging the object´s phase lag to a driving acoustic oscillation with terahertz or millimeter wave radiation. The sensitivity of the developed technique covers metallic as well as dielectric objects. Oscillation amplitudes can be as small as 1 μm, which are comparable to the human perception level. The application for security technology is discussed.
