The exploration of the sea bottom using hydroacustical methods produces large amounts of data, especially if high spatial resolutions are necessary for the locating of objects. This contribution investigates the data compression of ultrasonic signals aiming at low storage and transmission costs. A new algorithm for the lossless compression of echo-sounder signals is proposed. Furthermore, it is compared with common universal compression programs in terms of coding efficiency and speed.
