Interferometric Laser Doppler Field Sensor for the Measurement of the Velocity Distribution of Complex Flows

Keywords: laser Doppler anemometry, wavelength division multiplexing, frequency division multiplexing, velocity profile, turbulent flows

We present a novel interferometric sensor based on the laser Doppler technique as well as appropriate concepts for signal processing. The sensor allows the measurement of spatially resolved velocity profiles inside laminar and turbulent flows with micrometer resolution. Therefore it is well suited for research in turbulence, micro fluidics, and flow rate measurement. The combination of two such profile sensors enables to measure all three velocity components within a two-dimensional area without the use of a camera. Compared to image processing methods the proposed principle achieves a lower measurement uncertainty of the velocity.
